27 سپتامبر Short Episode Series Shows New Episodes Everything Explained
Stage One: The Story Often Arrives Before the Script
By the time anyone shouts “action” on a short drama set, somebody has already worked out which story is worth the gamble. Follow a few hits backward and you often discover a book at the start of the pipeline. Breaking the Ice, ReelShort’s 2024 hockey romance centered on a secret child, is adapted from the novel Shutout by Jami Davenport. Bound by Honor, a mafia arranged-marriage series that short episode series ReelShort launched on November 1, 2025, comes from a novel by Cora Reilly. Korea’s 2026 office romance Quiet in the Office!, carrying a 19+ age rating, is adapted from a web novel and webtoon. With a number of app owners also operating reading businesses, source material stays close at hand: Crazy Maple Studio produces the interactive-story app Chapters, Holywater operates the books app My Passion, and GoodNovel is GoodShort’s Google Play developer name. When no book exists, writers fall back on well-worn tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, identity reveals and family drama. A script has a single job: to compress a long drama story into scenes that each deliver a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds.
Stage Two: Casting Recognizable Faces
It’s at the casting stage that the format’s economics show up on screen. On IMDb, the cast lists for short series keep repeating the same names. Noah Fearnley led ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha in 2024 and came back in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star. On GoodShort in 2025, Rosa Singerman headlined both Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia, appearing opposite Franky Cammarata in the second. Since a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over, it counts for a lot that a lead with a following on one app arrives at the next title with a head start. TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women, so producers are also casting with a particular viewer in mind. DramaBox keeps a production team in Los Angeles.
Stage Three: Seventy Episodes Shot in About Eight Days
TheWrap places the typical cost of a Western short drama at $150,000 to $300,000 per series, with filming lasting eight to ten days. Wikipedia’s overview of the format offers a similar picture, putting a seven- to ten-day shoot at $150,000 to $250,000 for 50 to 70 or more episodes. Do the math and a 70-episode series shot in eight days requires close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day. Chinese producers selling abroad have reported leaner numbers still, with Jiuzhou Culture putting a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. That comes to roughly $1,400 to $2,100 per finished episode. Dubbed Chinese adaptations made up about 80 percent of the more than 600 titles Jiuzhou reported it had produced for overseas markets, while original overseas productions made up 20 percent. Since dubbing lets a studio recycle a finished domestic series, the pricey shoot happens only once.
Stage Four: Cutting to 60–100 Seconds
The footage is sliced into episodes of 60 to 100 seconds in the editing room, all framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. An episode of that length has room for a turn or two of plot, so each one is structured around a question that the next episode promises to answer. The house style is the cliffhanger: the mechanism that pulls you from one episode to the next. A 70-episode series totals roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time once those slivers are stacked together. Episode counts differ widely by title, and GoodShort’s official pages list 30 episodes for My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen and 100 for The Dragon King’s Return. ReelShort also operates official channels on TikTok, YouTube and Dailymotion, letting the same footage find viewers who never open the app. Put another way, editors are cutting video dramas for several screens at once.
Stage Five: Placing the Paywall
The last creative decision is also a commercial one. The first eight to ten episodes are free under the standard model TheWrap outlines. ReelShort’s own blog places its free run at usually five to 15 episodes, and TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. Episodes after that unlock with coins, with the standard cost of an episode listed as about 60 coins in ReelShort’s blog. You can also buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and auto-renews, or earn coins by watching ads, with one ad unlocking two premium episodes according to the same blog. Since prices differ by platform, country and promotion, your store may display a different figure. Paywalls falling right on a cliffhanger rank among the most common complaints about these apps, along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs, which is why placement is the controversial part. Any coin generator or modded “unlimited coins” app promising a way around the wall is unofficial and best avoided.
Stage Six: Animation and AI-Generated Series
The most recent production stage does away with the camera entirely. ReelShort now offers animated motion comics that sit alongside its live-action catalogue. The Lost Heir is a 58-episode family saga about Arthur Lancaster: he loses his memory rescuing his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and finally exposes the foster sister who kept framing him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, lists no cast: it is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor pursuing revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape. This title should not be mixed up with a separate 58-episode ShortMax series of the same name. No app has gone further than DramaWave: 36Kr reported that more than 80 percent of its newly released content is AI-generated and that the app’s annualized revenue passed $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. AI video dramas have also spread beyond the apps: Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island starring fruit contestants, showed as much on TikTok in March 2026 before critics widely labeled it “AI slop”.
Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Enters the Line
Established studios have noticed; Fox Entertainment offers the plainest example. In October 2025, Fox picked up an equity stake in Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app. Across two years, Fox also pledged to produce more than 200 vertical titles. Included in the Fox-produced series already on the app are Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside. In January 2026, Holywater secured a further $22 million in a round led by Horizon Capital, and My Drama took the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service. The eight-day shoot, it seems, has shifted from curiosity to line item, since a network-scale producer is committing to that volume.
A Quick Look at the Production Line

Laying the stages side by side brings the logic of the business into focus. Much of the rest is arranged around the shoot, the fixed, expensive block. Scripts tend to come in pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes, known faces carry the casting, and cliffhangers that feed a paywall shape the edit. TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category, although fans who search for a “reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind. The table below lays out typical time and cost at each stage, using only publicly reported figures. If no reliable number has been published, the table says so instead of guessing.
| Stage | Typical time and cost | What takes place |
|---|---|---|
| Source material and scripting | No public number | A novel, web fiction or a proven trope gets adapted; Breaking the Ice is based on Shutout, Bound by Honor on Cora Reilly’s novel |
| Casting | No public figure | Leads are cast, often actors who already have short-drama credits; animated titles skip this step |
| Shoot | 7–10 days; $150K–250K (Wikipedia) or $150K–300K per series (TheWrap); $100K–150K per 70 episodes (Jiuzhou) | 50 to 70+ episodes are shot for a vertical frame |
| Edit | Episodes lasting 60–100 seconds | Footage is cut into installments that each end on a cliffhanger |
| Release and paywall placement | First 8–10 episodes free (TheWrap); about 60 coins for each later episode on ReelShort | Viewers unlock episodes with coins, with ads or with a weekly pass costing about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 |
| Animation and AI | Costs undisclosed | Motion comics such as The Lost Heir and Shattered Vows; over 80 percent of DramaWave’s new releases made with AI |
| Studio co-productions | 200+ titles over two years (Fox for My Drama) | An established studio makes vertical series for an app |
